What Is Dry Drone Hire?
Dry hire means you rent the drone equipment and fly it yourself. No pilot included. No crew. Just the gear. If you’re looking for a pilot to hire, this page will be best to check out.
It’s the same concept as renting a car without a driver. You’re responsible for operating it, looking after it, and making sure you follow the rules while it’s in your hands.
This is different from hiring a drone pilot in Sydney, where a licensed operator turns up with their own equipment, flies the mission, and hands you the footage or data. That’s called wet hire.
Dry Hire vs. Wet Hire. What’s the Difference?
With dry hire, you get the equipment only and you fly it yourself. You’re responsible for CASA compliance, your own flight operations insurance, and you pay a daily or weekly rental fee.
With wet hire, a licensed drone pilot in Sydney turns up with their own gear, flies the mission, and delivers the footage or data. CASA compliance and insurance are their responsibility. You pay a per-job or day rate.
The simple way to think about it: dry hire is for people who can fly. Wet hire is for people who need results but don’t want to touch a drone.

Who Uses Dry Drone Hire in Sydney?
Dry hire isn’t for everyone. But for the people who need it, it’s a much smarter option than buying.
Licensed commercial pilots are the biggest group. These are operators who already hold a Remote Pilot Licence (RePL) and work under a Remote Operator’s Certificate (ReOC), but they need a specific drone for a job that their own fleet doesn’t cover. Maybe the client needs thermal imaging and they don’t own a Mavic 3T. Renting for a week is a lot cheaper than buying a platform they’ll use twice a year.
Project managers and site supervisors who are trained to fly and prefer to capture their own site footage on their own schedule. Several of our dry hire clients are construction PMs across western Sydney and Parramatta who run weekly progress captures without needing to book an external pilot every time.
Real estate agents and property marketers who have their own drone skills and want to shoot listings themselves. If you’ve got the flying ability but not the latest gear, renting a Mavic 3 Pro for a weekend of property shoots makes more sense than owning one that sits in a drawer between campaigns.

Drones Available for Hire
The DJI Mavic 3 Pro is our go-to for aerial photography, real estate shoots, and content creation. It shoots 5.1K video, gets up to 46 minutes of flight time, and comes as a Fly More Combo with the DJI RC Pro controller. If you need cinematic footage, this is the one.
The DJI Mavic 3T is built for thermal work. It shoots 4K HDR video and includes thermal imaging, which makes it the right choice for roof inspections, solar panel surveys, and building assessments. Flight time is around 34 minutes with O3 transmission.
The DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise is a commercial workhorse. 4K UHD video, up to 45 minutes of flight time, and O3 transmission. It’s suited for commercial mapping, site inspections, and public safety applications.
The DJI Matrice 4E is the most capable platform in our fleet. It runs O4 transmission, gets up to 49 minutes of flight time, and shoots 4K video. This is the one for enterprise-level surveying, large-scale inspections, and serious mapping work.

What’s Included in Every Rental
Every dry hire from Enord comes as a complete kit. You won’t get halfway to site and realise you’re missing something.
Each rental includes the drone, controller, Fly More Combo batteries (so you get multiple batteries, not just one), a charger, carry case, and spare propellers. If the drone requires a tablet or screen, that’s included too.
What’s usually not included: memory cards and any specialist third-party accessories. Bring a high-speed microSD card compatible with the model you’re hiring.
We also offer a pre-rental briefing at pickup. Even if you’ve flown DJI gear before, every model has its quirks. Ten minutes going over the specific platform can save you an hour of troubleshooting on site. We’d rather spend that time upfront than have you stuck at a job in Penrith trying to figure out a firmware update.
CASA Requirements You Need to Know
This is the part most people either skip or get confused by. Here’s the simple version.
Flying Recreationally vs. Commercially
If you’re renting a drone to fly for fun (photos for yourself, a holiday video, footage for your personal social media), you’re flying recreationally. You don’t need a licence or accreditation for that, and you don’t need to register the drone. But you do need to follow the standard drone safety rules.
If you’re renting a drone for work, for a client, or for anything where money changes hands, that’s commercial use. The rules are stricter.
For commercial use with a drone under 2kg: You need an RPA operator accreditation (free, done online through myCASA), you need to register the drone, and you need to notify CASA. No full licence required, but you still need to fly within the standard operating conditions.
For commercial use with a drone over 2kg: You need a Remote Pilot Licence (RePL) and you need to be operating under a Remote Operator’s Certificate (ReOC). This is the full commercial setup.
Most of the drones in our fleet are over 2kg. So if you’re renting one for work, you’ll need the proper credentials. We’ll ask for proof of your qualifications before the rental. That’s not us being difficult. That’s us making sure everyone stays legal and safe.
Quick CASA Checklist for Dry Hire
Before you pick up the drone, make sure you’ve sorted:
- You hold the right CASA credentials for how you plan to use it (recreational rules, accreditation, or RePL/ReOC)
- The drone is registered with CASA if being used commercially
- You have adequate insurance for your flight operations (our insurance covers the equipment, your operations are on you)
- You’ve checked the airspace where you plan to fly using a CASA-verified drone safety app like OpenSky
- You understand the 120m altitude limit, visual line of sight requirement, and the 5.5km controlled airport buffer zone
- You’re flying in daylight hours only (unless you hold specific CASA approvals)

Where You Can (and Can’t) Fly a Drone in Sydney
Sydney is one of the trickiest cities in Australia to fly a drone. A big chunk of the metro area sits within controlled airspace around Sydney Airport (Kingsford Smith). That means if your drone weighs more than 250g, you can’t fly within 5.5km of the airport without specific permissions.
That rules out a lot of popular spots. The CBD, Bondi, Coogee, most of the inner west and eastern suburbs, and areas around Mascot, Botany, and Marrickville are all inside the restricted zone.
Where you can fly more easily:
The Northern Beaches from Dee Why up to Palm Beach are generally outside the main controlled zone and popular with drone operators. Same goes for parts of the Sutherland Shire, western Sydney around Penrith and the Blue Mountains, and the Royal National Park.
Being based in Melrose Park, we’re well positioned to support rentals across the northwest, the Hills District, Parramatta, and western Sydney. These areas tend to have more flexible airspace and are where a lot of construction and development activity happens.
Centennial Park and most inner-city parks have their own drone restrictions separate from CASA rules. Always check with the local council as well.
The best habit is to check the OpenSky app or CASA-verified drone safety app before every flight. Airspace conditions can change, especially near helicopter routes and during events.
If you need to fly in restricted airspace for a commercial job, you can apply to CASA for a flight authorisation. But that takes time, so plan ahead.

Do I need a licence to dry hire a drone in Sydney? It depends on what you’re using it for. Recreational use doesn’t require a licence, but you still need to follow the CASA drone safety rules. Commercial use requires at minimum an operator accreditation (for sub-2kg drones) or a full RePL and ReOC for heavier aircraft. We’ll check your credentials before the rental.

Can I fly a rented drone over Sydney Harbour? Parts of Sydney Harbour fall within controlled airspace due to proximity to the airport and helicopter routes. You’ll need to check the airspace using a CASA-verified app. Some sections closer to the Heads may be flyable. Flying from a boat adds extra complexity. Always check before you go.
Is insurance included with the rental? Our insurance covers the equipment (hull insurance). It won’t cover your liability if the drone causes damage to someone or something during your flight. You’ll likely need your own drone insurance or public liability cover for the rental period. We can point you in the right direction.
Can I take a rented drone outside Sydney? Talk to us about it. We’re generally flexible, but we’ll want to know where you’re going and what you’re doing so we can advise on logistics and any airspace considerations.
What’s the minimum rental period? We offer daily rentals on most of our fleet. Some enterprise gear may have a minimum of a few days due to setup and calibration. Just ask when you enquire.

Do you deliver? Yes. We offer delivery and pickup across the Sydney metro area. If you’re on a job site and can’t come to Melrose Park, we’ll get the gear to you.
